In his opening address to the attendees of the 2007 Shepherd's Conference, John MacArthur presented a message called Why Every Self-Respecting Calvinist is a Premillennialist. His message can be downloaded for free at the Shepherd's Fellowship website. [A person will need to register a free account to get access to the messages]. John expanded the subject of election, Israel, and premillennialism into a 6 part series that can be accessed at the Grace to You ministry website HERE. In this message, John argued that those who are consistent Calvinists - those who affirm God's unconditional election in salvation - must also affirm God's unconditional promise of election to the nation of Israel to restore them to a kingdom ruled by Jesus Christ for 1,000 years.
The message troubled a lot of non-premillennial Calvinists who took John's words as a personal swipe against their views. They believe those promises to Israel are to be understood as being fulfilled in the establishment of the NT Church. Hence, the work Jesus did on the cross fulfilled the terms of those promises when the Spirit was given at Pentecost and the NT Church, comprised of both Jews and gentiles, was founded.
Dr. Samuel Waldron of the Midwest Center for Theological Studies put together a small series of blog articles he turned into a book responding to John's arguments called, MacArthur's Millennial Manifesto: A Friendly Response. Dr. Waldron challenged John's position on unconditional election and many non-premillennialists welcomed it as a sound defeat of the thesis in John's message.
I wrote my own review of Dr. Waldron's book, along with a few rejoinders to his arguments against John's position. It's my contention that he didn't answer John as well as his supporters believe.
